Oedo-Koh Incense | Water drop

Nippon Kodo

€32,00

In the Edo Period people did not have baths at home, and so 600 public bathhouses were built. Later on, large bathtubs were developed. As everyone was naked and people comingled without regard for age, gender, or rank, the bathhouse was an egalitarian place. A popular product was the Yuya no-shizuku scented lotion made with floral essences distilled using a still known as a ranbiki.
This fragrance will create a warm and friendly note when you step out of the bath, reminiscent of the bustle of the bathhouse, where neighbours laughed and splashed each other.

The fragrance of ancient Edo

This collection was created by master incense artisans in Japan to express the fragrant atmosphere of Edo, the former name of Tokyo, which was also called Oedo, the great Edo. It was a playful and stylish city, born out of a marriage of the elegant and the common and the course and the refined. People enjoyed the four seasons, treasured their friends and neighbours, and lived lives brimming with vitality.

Oedo Koh, premium Japanese incense

This collection is an invitation to bask in the fragrant world of Edo: a single thin column of smoke beckons you to the stylish, modernist world that Edo represents. The fragrances have been specially blended to correlate with the folk tales that were told during the Edo Period (1603-1868).
Nippon Kodo paid special attention to colours and textures: they chose traditional tones, and they made sure the packaging had a luxurious surface finish. The incense nestles in a paulownia box with a tin incense holder that resembles the stone pavements of Edo. Tin was a favoured metal by the upper class during the Edo period. It can be washed with water and will last for a long time. The outside of the box is adorned with a kamon, a Japanese emblem and the inside with Ukiyo-e paintings that express the aesthetic of this glorious period.
